(This was after the first discussion we had on twitter). What I was able to do subsequently was boot from the livecd. The track I took thereafter was a little different. If I remember correctly, I chrooted onto the hard disk and then did an apt-get for the kernel. One nasty problem on the DVD indeed. IMO, there was indeed a problem on the DVD.
